PHOTOBOOK!!2011 – Call For Work for Annual Photobook Exhibition and Sale
Posted on 28 August 2011 | Comments Off
We have just announced PHOTOBOOK!!2011, a call for work for our second annual photobook exhibition and sale. Twenty photobooks will be selected for this show with the four “best-of-show” photographers exhibiting up to four prints each in the gallery. Along with the exhibition and gallery sale, we create an online catalog of the twenty books that the Davis Orton Gallery hosts for the upcoming year. Photographers can submit up to three separate titles for consideration. Deadline, October 15.
Last year’s exhibition/sale proved to be a very popular destination in Hudson. Mark and I observed that visitors spent considerable time going from book to book, reading cover to cover. The exhibit also helped introduce the public to self-published books by photographers as an art form in its own right. “Beauty is only skin deep. But ah! me; freckles go to the bone.” Fritz Liedtke quotes Mark Twain to introduce us to his new work, Astra Velum, a series of amazing photogravures. Visit Liedtke’s website for a full explanation of both the subject and the process of production, photogravure. Gallery 291, 291 Geary St. will present this work July 21 to September 1, 2011. Allison Leach’s “Misfit Explorers” on Cover of Chronogram Magazine
Posted on 5 July 2011 | Comments Off
Allison Leach’s “Bi-Polar Explorer” from her series “Misfit Explorers” is on the July 2011 cover of Chronogram Magazine. (flipbook version) Allison’s portfolio is on view this month in Theaters and the Theatrical at the Davis Orton Gallery.
According to editor Brian K. Mahoney, “…. we were smitten with Allison Leach’s staged photographs of imagined imperialist nincompoops of yesteryear from the get-go…. The more we lived with Leach’s goofy adventurers—revealing the basic absurdity of colonialism through their collective fiction—the more we couldn’t live without them. … What says America better than a man waving a flag? Never you mind it’s the Union Jack.”
Theaters and the Theatrical with photographs by Stefanie Klavens, Nandita Raman, Michael Hunold and Allison Leach continues through July 31.
Meet Allison and the other artists at a Closing Reception and belo3rd Gallery Stroll on Saturday, July 30 from 5-8pm.

We are pleased to announce that Karen, co-director of Davis Orton Gallery, will be a juror for Critical Mass 2011. Jurying Critical Mass is a terrific opportunity to see and support great photography and photographers. In Critical Mass, hundreds of photographers submit their work which is evaluated by Pre-Screeners. From that group, 200 are selected to go on to “a jury of approximately 200 of the world’s best curators, editors, and other professionals” who have agreed to view and vote on the Finalists’ work. Using these votes, at least one photographer is chosen to receive a book award and once the monograph is published, everyone who enters and juries will receive a copy of the book(s)

Shelby Lee Adams, who will be exhibiting at the Davis Orton Gallery September 9 to October 9, has selected a small group of photographs for our gallery flat files that are now available to the public. Included in the group are “The Newsome Children, 1997″ above and two prints that are each the only ones remaining from 16″ x 20″ editions. Adams has been working for over thirty years photographing the hollow dwellers of eastern Kentucky. Born in Hazard, Kentucky, Adams’ connection to the subjects in his photographs is evident in the way he has been welcomed into their homes and lives. A recent Geggenheim Fellowship recipient, Shelby’s fourth book, “Salt & Truth” published by Candela Books, is due out in September.
Rebecca Doughty in Group Show, Picture Books, at Clark Gallery

Rebecca Doughty is in an entertaining group exhibition at the Clark Gallery, Lincoln MA that features work in all media that pictures or references a book within the composition, or is a book of some kind. The exhibit runs through August 6. On June 11 there will be a daylong sidewalk book sale in front of the gallery and a reception from 4-6 that afternoon.
Doughty exhibited at the Davis Orton Gallery last year. For those in the Hudson area who remember Rebecca’s wry and deceptively simple little acrylic works and those who would like to be introduced to them for the first time, please ask to see pieces from our flat files.
