Saturday, April 6 was a great night for art and dining at the Davis Orton Gallery and all of BeLo3rd. Visitors to the gallery feasted on tastings from Cafe LePerche and feasted upon the exhibition of photographs by Stephen DiRado (Celestial) and Bob Avakian (From Night to Day) and the portfolios of Susan Bowen (Legs and Feet) and Miska Draskoczy (Gowanus Wild). Ernie Button’s series on “Vanishing Spirits,the Dried Remains of Single Malt Scotch” is featured on a recent NPR blog posting by Audrey Carlsen. It’s an interesting read and includes other terrific images. Besides their mystery and beauty, his single malt photographs have intrigued researchers at Princeton University’s Complex Fluids Group. Ernie exhibited images from his series, “Cerealism”, at the Davis Orton Gallery in 2010.

Raves for Tamara Staples’ book “The Magnificent Chicken”

Tamara Staples, who will exhibit at the Davis Orton Gallery June 28 to July 28, has been receiving rave reviews for her new book, published by Chronicle Books, “The Magnificent Chicken”. The book, which features an introduction by Ira Glass of This American Life, has received a number of glowing reviews. The LA Weekly, Slate, and the Wall Street Journal (you need a subscription for this one) are unanimous in their praise for the poultry and the photographer. Tamara was also a guest blogger for the Chronicle Books Blog where she shared the personal side of this project. Happily, all these sites feature lots of images and information about the book. Jeff Jacobson’s latest book, “The Last Roll”, now available

Daylight Publications has announced the release of Jeff Jacobson’s latest book, “The Last Roll”. It may be purchased directly from Daylight and we hope to have some for sale at the gallery very soon. Jeff exhibited photographs from both “Melting Point” (Nazraeli Press, 2006) and “The Last Roll” at the Davis Orton Gallery in 2011. Jeff’s photographs are disorienting, mysterious and beautiful. Composed in the camera with no additional manipulation, they pull us in to an unreal world that emerges from the every day.

Landscape Workshop offered by Karen Halverson

Karen Halverson, an award winning artist who has exhibited in museums nation-wide and at the Davis Orton Gallery in 2012 is offering a landscape workshop April 20 to April 24 at her home/studio in beautiful Columbia County. (She will also include applicants who can only attend the weekend of April 20-21.)

This is a great opportunity for photographers to work with an outstanding photographer and teacher to explore new directions re project ideas, aesthetics, technique, picture editing and structuring a portfolio. Karen, traditionally uses large format cameras in her work but is now also working with a Nikon D 800 and finds the results stand up beautifully – both absolutely and in comparison. She anticipates most attendees will be working digitally. Contact Karen for more information.

John Chervinsky featured in UK Magazine, Black + White Photography

John Chervinsky’s photographs are the subject of a two-page article in the current issue of Black + White Photography, a UK magazine. The Davis Orton Gallery exhibited work from Chervinsky’s black and white portfolio, An Experiment in Perspective in 2009. In 2012, we exhibited photographs from his new color series, Studio Physics.

Fran Forman in Dallas, Durango, LA, Washington DC and Hebei Province China

Fran Forman who exhibited photographs from her portfolio, “The Alchemy of Memory” at the Davis Orton Gallery in 2012 has been heading west ever since. She has exhibited in Durango at Open Shutter Fine Art Photography; AfterImage Fine Art Photography Gallery, Dallas; at Photo LA at the Susan Spiritus Gallery booth. In 2013, her work will be part of group exhibitions at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Washington, DC where several of her pieces were acquired and the ShiJiaZhuang Art Museum in Hebei Province, China.
